MADURAI: The Madurai district, which achieved 163 per cent over the target laid down for raising the collections for the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund last year, is gearing up to mop up huge collections this time too. The Assistant Director of the Ex-Servicemen Welfare Department, Captain M. Madhavan, said the district raised Rs.41 lakhs against Rs.25.4 lakhs last year. This year, a target of Rs.26.6 lakhs has been fixed. He said on Wednesday that the members of the public could contribute by sending demand drafts towards the Armed Forces Flag Day fund.

Meanwhile, personnel from the Tamil Nadu Home Guards and NCC cadets took up hundi collection. The went around the streets in the city mobilising funds from the public. The Collector, D. Raajendiran, inaugurated the collection by making a contribution.
