CHENNAI: For the residents of Sarathy Nagar's fifth street in Velachery, the problem of sewage overflow has become never-ending. Sewage overflows from a manhole on Sarathy Nagar Main Road like a stream on to the fifth street, where it stagnates.

K. Poongothai, a resident, said sewage has been flowing for the past one month and authorities have not taken action.

The unabated flow on the street, the only approach road for residents of Kathiravan Colony and Balamurugan Nagar, creates many hardships. Residents have to wade through knee-deep, stinking sewage. Students of a Montessori school in Sarathy Nagar Extension and parents who come to drop them are badly affected.

A similar problem also worries residents of Tansi Nagar 14th, 18th and 19th cross streets. "One-foot of sewage is stagnating in Tansi Nagar's 19th cross street and even after the rains have stopped, the water has not receded," says K.R. Subramaniam, secretary, Tansi Nagar Residents' Welfare Association. Residents are upset that Metrowater authorities have not been forthcoming to mitigate the problem.
