Lorry smuggling wood stopped during vehicle check

CHENNAI: Forest officials in Tiruvallur, assisted by local police, have confiscated 3.4 tonnes of red sanders logs at Gummidipoondi on Wednesday, which were being smuggled from Renigunta in Andhra Pradesh. The Forest officials have detained two persons in this connection.

According to T.V. Manjunatha, District Forest Officer, Tiruvallur, the local police while conducting a vehicle check stopped a lorry bearing an Andhra Pradesh registration number. The driver and the cleaner were interrogated and the logs seized, and the case was handed over to the Forest authorities, he said.

Illegal felling of red sanders from the forest areas in Andhra Pradesh is posing a major challenge to the Forest officials of both Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. The wood is smuggled to the city from where it goes to Japan for making musical instruments. The value of the wood was estimated at Rs 4 lakhs. The arrested are Murugan (32) of Nagari and Dheena (27) of Madharappakkam.
