Education reservation Bill to be introduced

Special Correspondent

Those run by minority communities to be exempted

  • A new clause (5) in to be inserted Article 15 for the advancement of socially and educationally backward classes
  • Bill not to be referred to the Parliamentary Standing Committee
  • BJP to oppose the amendment if minorities were kept out

NEW DELHI: A Constitution Amendment Bill that would provide for reservation for the socially and educationally backward classes, besides the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes, in private unaided educational institutions — other than those run by the minority communities — is to be introduced in this session of Parliament. The Union Cabinet took this decision on Thursday.

Union Minister and Cabinet spokesman Priyaranjan Dasmunsi said the Bill sought to amend the Constitution by inserting a new clause (5) in Article 15 for the advancement of socially and educationally backward classes of citizens or for the SCs/STs.

The amendment would enable the States to provide for reservation for these categories.
