Fire at Vikas Bhavan

NEW DELHI: A fire broke out on the first and second floors of Vikas Bhavan at ITO in Central Delhi on Thursday. A fireman was injured during the fire-fighting operation.

According to the Fire Department, they received a call around 8 p.m. informing that there was a fire at Vikas Bhavan. The blaze, which had engulfed both the floors, was soon declared ``medium'' and 25 fire-tenders were pressed into action.

During the fire-fighting, fireman Paramvir sustained injuries in the eyes and was taken to hospital.

The blaze was brought under control in an hour.

The affected offices on the second floor belonged to the State Forest Department and the Home Guards. A consumers' court located on the first floor was also gutted.

Appeals dismissed

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Thursday dismissed two appeals against an Election Commission decision dismissing two applications challenging the merger of the Himachal Vikas Congress (HVC) with the Congress in April 2004.

Dismissing the contention of appellants Desh Raj Sharma and Karamchand Bhatia that theirs was the real organisation as the decision to merge HVC with the Congress was a personal decision of the former Union Minister for Communications Sukh Ram, Justice Vikramjit Sen said that there was no force in their argument.

The Election Commission had dismissed their petitions in March 2005.

Opposition charge

NEW DELHI: The Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, S.P. Ratawal, on Thursday accused the Sheila Dikshit Government as well as the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre of indulging in Islamisation of the education system by giving special grants to Muslim families and suspending financial help to Scheduled Caste families.

Addressing a press conference along with senior BJP leader Jagdish Mamgain, Mr. Ratawal said the Government was providing economic grant to students from Muslim families earning up to Rs. 1 lakh annually.

Servant arrested

NEW DELHI: An 18-year-old domestic help, who had allegedly escaped with Rs. 1.5 lakhs from the house of his employers at Krishna Nagar in East Delhi on November 22, has been arrested by the East Delhi police.

According to the police, the accused, Raju alias Chhotu, was arrested at New Delhi railway station when he was about to board to train for Mumbai.

The police have recovered Rs. 55,000 from the possession of the accused.

Raju allegedly told the police that he had escaped with the money when all the family members had gone outside.

Further investigations in the case are on.

Woman found hanging

NEW DELHI: A 26-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling in her house at Narela in North-West Delhi on Thursday.

According to the police, Sulochana, wife of Ramesh, a resident of Narela, was found hanging from the fan with the help of a rope around 2-15 p.m. No suicide note was recovered from the spot.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Ramesh and Sulochana were married for the past eight years and had one daughter from the marriage.

The Narela police have initiated inquest proceedings to ascertain the reasons behind the incident.
