dated December 10, 1955: PM gives a new slogan

Prime Minister Nehru on December 9 gave the nation a new slogan, "Keep in step with each other." He was declaring open the new Legislators' Hostel building, situated on the left bank of the Hundri river at Kurnool. Explaining this military phrase, Mr. Nehru said that he was using this expression not exactly in the physical sense of keeping step, but rather in the sense of cooperation - keeping in step mentally and in every other way and not only physically - working together in the great cause of building a new India. Referring to the great progress India had made during the last eight years since the achievement of independence, the Prime Minister said that visitors from outside India were very much impressed with India's progress and he thought that one of the biggest things necessary in the country today was that "we, in India, should know what we have done and are doing." Touching upon the controversy that the report of the States Reorganisation Commission had raised in some parts of the country, Mr. Nehru said that they who were counselling cooperation and tolerance to the other nations of the world should, "in our own country set an example of cooperation and goodwill and the capacity to decide every controversy, every problem, peacefully and by friendly methods." He said India had forgotten the knack of unity and the capacity to work together. When the country regained them it became independent.
