Chartered Accountants' body asked to collaborate with universities

Staff Reporter

Call to explore outsourcing opportunities

  • Help for e-governance mooted
  • Need to re-orient priorities
  • 2,500 CAs participating in the conference

KOCHI: Governor R.L. Bhatia has called upon the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India to share its expertise with universities for improving systems by updating the syllabi in tune with the changing times.

Such a collaboration would go a long way in inspiring young minds towards shaping them up as efficient corporate leaders, he said while inaugurating the annual conference of the Southern India Regional Council of ICAI here on Friday.

The Governor said chartered accountants in India have a pivotal role to play in tandem with the country's national resurgence. He observed that most accounting and financial services were increasingly being outsourced to India in a very big way and chartered accountants need to explore the situation with professional vision.

It is high time that the institute pondered over how to avail of this great opportunity for employment and economic prosperity by providing a second layer of certified accountants.

Significantly enough, e-governance, transparency and accountability are becoming popular and widely accepted by State Governments. The Kerala Government has already taken leading initiatives in the implementation of e-governance.

The institute, with its large infrastructure and qualified professionals spread across the country, should come forward to assist the State Government in such innovative programmes, he said.

In the wake of liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation, several avenues have opened up for enterprising nations to explore and surge ahead.

What is imperative is to have the resolve and resilience to reorient its priorities according to the new environment, he said.

V.C.James, Chairman of SIRC, welcomed the gathering. K.V. Thomas, MLA, T.N. Manoharan, vice-president of ICAI, V.X. Jose, Chairman of Ernakulam branch of SIRC, Babu Abraham Kallivaayalil, member of the SIRC and convener of the conference, spoke. M. Devaraja Reddy, Secretary, SIRC, proposed a vote of thanks.

About 2,500 chartered accountants belonging to the southern region are participating in the two-day conference. Sitaram Yechury, MP, will address the valedictory session on Saturday.
