BANGALORE: K.S. Ludu, Additional Development Commissioner, Union Ministry of Small-scale Industries, has appealed to small entrepreneurs to upgrade technology to face challenges created by new economic policies and globalisation.

Inaugurating "Vision-2006", an exhibition of lighting and allied electrical products, at the Small Industries Service Institute (SISI) premises, Mr. Ludu said small units are facing several problems besides competition from multinational corporations. He urged small entrepreneurs to make use of the Technology Upgrading Scheme of the ministry. Under the scheme, units can avail themselves of 15 per cent subsidy. A maximum of Rs. 15 lakhs will be provided for upgrading technology.

Mr. Ludu said there are seven lakh small-scale industries in the country and the sector accounts for 35 per cent of exports and 40 per cent of goods manufactured. Outsourcing of goods by large units will create a market for small units, he added.

Five projects under the Integrated Infrastructure Development Scheme are being implemented in the State at a cost of Rs. 7 crores. Four cluster development projects are also being implemented, Mr. Ludu said.

Mohammed Sanaulla, Commissioner for Industrial Development and State Director of Industries and Commerce, said the Government will soon announce a new industrial policy (2006-11). The policy, which will address grievances of large and small industries, is being drafted under the guidance of P.P. Prabhu, former Secretary, Union Commerce Ministry, he said.

S.S. Dhillon, SISI director, said that under the Small Industries Development Organisation, the institute is implementing a credit-linked capital subsidy scheme for upgrading technology.

In coordination with district industries centres, State Government bodies and the Karnataka Small-scale Industries' Association (KASSIA), the SISI, situated in the Rajajinagar Industrial Estate, Bangalore, has taken up developmental programmes for small-scale units. KASSIA president Hareesh Hegde said the association will hold a national-level exhibition in Bangalore to showcase products of both small and large industries.

The three-day exhibition and vendor development programme will conclude on Sunday.
