GUNTUR: Well-known children's writer Devulapalli Subbaraya Sastry, better known as Bujjai, was selected for the Dr. Manga Devi Sahitya Puraskaram for the year 2005. The award, instituted in 1994 by the founder of Sri Venkateshwara Bala Kuteer N. Manga Devi, carries Rs. 10,000 in cash and a memento. Some of the well-known recipients of the award include Mahidara Nalini Mohan, Edida Kameswara Rao, D. Sujatha Devi, Velaga Venkatappaiah and Ravuri Bharadwaja. Sastry was born in 1931 at Pithapuram to Devulapalli Krishna Sastry and Rajahamsa. He is known as `Brahma of Comics' as he created many comic strips for children. His Dumboo character brought him instant fame. Sastry's comics are not confined to Telugu alone, but are translated into various other Indian languages.
Prathiba Pallavam Award
Prathiba Pallavam, the annual award given to students talented in various disciplines and instituted in memory of Kondepudi Lavanya will be given to Busurapalli V. Rahula. Rahula, born in a family of musicians, is a gifted writer and a budding poetess. She had won many awards at the State-level competitions earlier, Dr. Manga Devi said. These awards would be presented during the `Lalitha Kala Utsav' to be held at Bala Kuteer on Saturday evening.
