CHENNAI: Doordarshan Kendra had a scheme to provide live coverage of classical musical concerts and other forms of art performances in Podhigai channel at an affordable cost, T.S. Gagan, Director, Doordarshan Kendra, Chennai, said here on Friday. Inaugurating the Sri Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha's 26th Isai, Iyal, Nataka Vizha, Mr. Gagan appealed to sabhas and organisations engaged in promoting and preserving traditional music to make best use of the schemes offered by Doordarshan Kendras. V.V. Sundaram, a non-resident Indian from Cleveland in the U.S., who promotes traditional forms of Indian music, presented the Birudhu "Vani Kala Sudhakara" to Sudha Raghunathan (carnatic vocal), Vellore Ramabhadran (mridangam), A. Kanyakumari (violin), Revathi Ramachandran (bharatanatyam), and Kathadi Ramamurthy (stage artiste). A shawl, memento and a cash prize of Rs. 5,000 each were given to the awardees. N. Vittal, former Chief Vigilance Commissioner, highlighted the role played by the sabhas in nurturing music. R. Krishnaswamy, secretary, Narada Gana Sabha, and A.R. Srinivasan, offered their felicitations.
