It's a fight between kin in some panchayats

Staff Correspondent

HASSAN: A look at the list of candidates who are in the fray for the ensuing elections to zilla and taluk panchayats, reveals that some members of the same family are pitted against each other.

While brothers are contesting against each other in two constituencies of Arsikere taluk, in-laws are contesting in Arakalgud taluk.

While the former vice-president of Hassan Zilla Panchayat Rajashekar is contesting from Javagal constituency of Arsikere taluk on Janata Dal

(Secular) ticket, the Congress pitted his brother, Rame Gowda, against him.

Similar is the situation in Banavara where the former member of zilla panchayat B.H. Raju of the Congress will take on his brother B.H. Narayana, who is contesting on Bharatiya Janata Party ticket.

In Ramanathapura constituency of Arkalgud taluk, Thippe Gowda, a former gram panchayat member, is contesting as a Congress candidate against his son-in-law Aiyanna Gowda, who is fighting on a BJP ticket.

Even as many former presidents and vice-presidents have been rendered ineligible to contest, owing to change in reservation of constituencies, 12 former members are seeking re-election this time. While 10 former members are seeking re-election for the second time, two members are trying their luck for the third time.

Of the total 40 constituencies in the zilla panchayat, triangular fight is seen only in few constituencies and there is straight fight between Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) in most of the constituencies in the taluk panchayat. Triangular fight is seen in Bageshpura of Arsikere taluk, Konanur and Ramananthapura of Arkalgud taluk, Magge of Alur taluk, Shravanabelagola, Gowdagere and Hirisave of Channarayapatna taluk. Eight candidates are contesting from Kattaya constituency of Hassan taluk.

The district administration is making all efforts to ensure free and fair polls.

While eight Election Officers and 13 Assistant Election Officers have been deputed for zilla panchayat elections, 16 Election Officers and 39 Assistant Election Officers are deputed for the taluk panchayat elections, according to Deputy Commissioner, K.H. Ashwathanarayana Gowda.
