SSA organises medical camps to identify disability

Staff Reporter

Aims at creating awareness among parents in rural areas The camp will have counsellors to train parents to take special care of their children

Coimbatore: The Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) has organised medical camps in the district to identify physical and mental disability in children in rural areas. Twelve such camps have been held and more will be organised in various parts of Coimbatore.

Unaware of facilities

The camps are organised in association with the District Disability Rehabilitation Office, the Coimbatore Medical College and the International Human Resource Development Centre for Disability - a non-Government organisation. Many of the parents were not aware of the availability of assistance from the Government. The aim of the programme was to create awareness among parents. People in rural areas did not have access to special schools. So, most of them were unaware of the facilities available to make the lives of their disabled children better, said N. Kaliappan, Assistant District Project Co-ordinator of SSA.

Thondamuthur, Perur, Avinashi, Palladam, Madukkarai, Kinathukadavu, Sulur, Udumalpet, Pongalur, Sultanpet, Sircar Samakulam and Gudimangalam are some of the places where the camps had been held. The camp would supply national identification cards to the participants. It would find out what kind of help the disabled wanted from the Government and speed up the supply of wheelchairs, hearing aids, spectacles for the visually challenged and other such equipment free of cost, Mr. Kaliappan said.

Specific needs

The one-day camp would also have counsellors who would train parents to take special care of their children who had specific needs, he added. Adults with disability could also participate in the camp.
