Parimarjan Negi fails to survive day of surprises

NEW DELHI: The pressure of expectation proved too much for young Parimarjan Negi. This immensely gifted top seed in the boys under-14 section crashed to a surprise loss at the hands of far lesser-rated Iranian Porya Dereni in the third round to complete a day of upset results in the Parsvnath Asian youth chess championship at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium here on Friday.

Before Negi lost his way, second seed Lalith Babu surrendered to Meghan Gupte in the second round. In boys' under-12, Ankit Rajpara held fancied Sethuraman in the second round. In the evening, World under-10 boys champion Sahaj Grover had to split the point.

Among the girls, under-12 champion Rucha Pujari went down to G. Sirisha in the second round while defending champion in the girls under-14 section, the lanky Ramya Krishna was upstaged by Mitali Patkar.
