Billiards & Snooker
MUMBAI: Snooker gets into fast forward mode with the world's first time limit men's doubles snooker tournament, InstaSnooker 2005, at the Bombay Gymkhana from December 13 to 17. Co-sponsored by Reid & Taylor and Bombay Gymkhana, the event rules stipulate a time limit for each shot (within 30 seconds) and each frame (not exceeding 30 minutes), apart from penalty for time violation in form of bonus points to opponents.
Nine pairs in the fray
Nine teams (total of 18 players) will be playing in a round-robin league format. Four teams with the highest score will qualify for the nine-frame semifinals, leading to the 13-frame final. According to Govind Mirchandani, CEO Reid & Taylor, the winning team will be richer by Rs. 2,16,000 and the total prize money is Rs. 6,25,000. India's ace cueists, including 2003 World snooker champion Pankaj Advani, two-time Asian snooker winner Yasin Merchant, 2004 Asian snooker champion Alok Kumar, apart from billiards exponents Geet Sethi and Devendra Joshi, will be seen in action. Cuesports have given India 14 World titles. Reid & Taylor will design special team outfits for the participants. The pairings: Team A (Jin Long and Tian Pengfei from China), Team B (Mohd. Joker and Mohd. Shehab from UAE), Team C (Mohd. Yousuf and Saleh Mohammad from Pakistan) and Team D (Kobkit Palajin and Nitiwat Kanjanasri from Thailand). Indian pairs: Team E (Alok Kumar and Manan Chandra), Team F (Pankaj Advani and Yasin Merchant), Team G (Devendra Joshi and Aditya Mehta), Team H (Neeraj Kumar and Rupesh Shah), and Team I (Geet Sethi and Omar Balsara).
