Assamese playwright dead

GUWAHATI: Mahendra Barthakur, one of the greatest playwrights of modern Assamese drama, died here on Friday after prolonged illness. He was 74.

Recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi award, he was the patriarch of Assamese drama, writing more than 120 of them in a span of more than 30 years. He was the undisputed king of modern Assamese mobile theatres.

Gogoi condoles

His death was condoled by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, Asom Sahitya Sabha president Kanak Sen Deka and Asom Gana Parishad president Brindabon Goswami.
