NEW DELHI: The vast experience of skipper Mukund Parmar proved handy for Gujarat as the 37-year-old used the flight effectively to land Railways in trouble on the opening day of their crucial Ranji Trophy Elite Group match at the Karnail Singh Stadium here on Friday. Electing to bat on a dry pitch that lived up to its promise of assisting the spinners, Railways stumbled from 92 for one to 188 all out in 90.1 overs. Parmar, bowling his left-arm spinners for the first time since 2001, broke the backbone of the host by claiming four top-order wickets in the space of 26 deliveries. Playing his 75th Ranji match after making debut in 1987, Parmar brought himself on in the second session and ended the 81-run second wicket stand between makeshift opener G. Shankar Rao (44, 4x4) and skipper Sunjoy Bangar (39, 4x4).
Smart stumping
Once Bangar was caught in the slips, Parmar had Rao smartly stumped by Parthiv Patel. J.P. Yadav and Raja Ali became Parmar's victims in successive overs. Parthiv brought off an easy stumping to send back Yadav, while Ali was adjudged leg-before. But a bigger blow awaited Railways in the post-tea session when the reliable Yere Goud was run out after failing to beat Hemal Watekar's throw from midwicket. Down the order, Sudhir Wankhede and Kulamani Parida contributed usefully before left-arm medium-pacer Ashraf Makda finished with a three-wicket haul to end Railways' rearguard action. The scores: Railways 1st innings: G. Shankar Rao st. Parthiv b Parmar 44, A. Pagnis c Parthiv b Makda 4, S. Bangar c Modi b Parmar 39, J. P. Yadav st. Parthiv b Parmar 3, Raja Ali lbw b Parmar 6, Y.
