Vamsadhara: compensation fears allayed

Special Correspondent

3,000 acres acquired so far

  • For the whole project, 10,000 acres will have to be acquired
  • Three reservoirs will have to be built
  • Compensation package to be fixed on December 15
  • Farmers can appeal for better deal

Srikakulam: Joint Collector M.Veerabrahmaiah said that Rs.12 crores was set aside for paying compensation for the 650 acres of land acquired at Parapuram where a reservoir of Vamsadhara project would come up.

The Minister for Revenue and Relief, Dharmana Prasada Rao is scheduled to perform bhoomi pooja for the reservoir on Sunday. Farmers whose lands had been acquired for the reservoir have been demanding compensation before the bhoomi pooja.

As much as 10,000 acres of land would have to be acquired for the entire project which would have three reservoirs including the one at Heeramandalam which would store 19 tmc of water. So far 3,000 acres have been acquired.

    The procedure

Speaking to The Hindu on Friday, Mr. Veerabrahmaiah said that the Land Acquisition Officer (LAO) would initially fix the compensation, which in the present case, would be done on December 15.

Farmers not satisfied with the package could appeal to the District Level Negotiations Committee (DLNC) which has the power to enhance the compensation amount by 50 percent. The DLNC would finalise the final payment by December 24, Mr. Veerabramaiah said.

The Joint Collector said farmers would have the option of appealing to the State Level Negotiation Committee but that would delay the payment.

    Interest payment

Mr. Veerabrahmaiah said that the authorities had taken possession of the land in question on December 1 and there was a provision for payment of interest at 12 percent on the compensation amount from the date of acquisition of lands.

So farmers are assured of 12 percent interest from December, he pointed out.
