Surana, Mahaveer Jain enter semifinals

BANGALORE: Surana Pre-University College and Mahaveer Jain College entered the semifinals of the Dr. Isaac Abraham memorial hockey tournament with thumping wins over St. Joseph's Arts & Science and Tirumala Education Society respectively.

Surana's penalty corner specialist V. Punith struck first in the seventh minute and capped it with a field goal in the eighth. In the second half, B.M. Puneeth (36th) and Ramesh (40th) rounded off the tally for Surana.

Mahaveer Jain thrashed Tirumala Education Society 5-1 with Kaveriappa firing in a brace, Harish Ponappa, Jithan and A.K. Subbaiah slotting home one apiece. Murthy scored Tirumala's solitary goal.

In the women's section, Jyothi Nivas beat St. John's Medical College 7-0. Delhakka (3) Mary Archana (2), Uma Devi and Shalini scored.

Maharani Ammanni beat Mount Carmel College 2-1 with Sushma Chengappa and Shalini sounding the boards. Marietta Deniese scored for Mount Carmel.

Baldwins in semifinals

Baldwins drubbed St. Joseph's Commerce 3-0 en route to the semifinals of the NIIT Cup inter-collegiate football tournament, organised by Endy Kreations, at the BUFC grounds here. Sultan, Raghu and Hasim got the goals for the winner.

Baldwins will take on BNM IT which downed Vijaya PU 3-1. Al Ameen and BMS Engg., which made the grade earlier, meet in the other semifinal.

BNM IT got its goals through Gaurav (2) and Karthik, while Shiva Chetan netted the loser's lone goal.

Govardhan netted the all-important goal for Al Ameen in its 1-0 win over CMRIMS.

In the under-14 five-a-side semifinals, Sri Kumaran's a0nd BNM scored contrasting victories. While Kumaran's went on a goal-scoring spree for a 5-0 margin with Anjin, Arun, Siddanth, Mayur and Chetan scoring, BNM prevailed over National HS 3-1 to make the final.

Shahid (2) and Wasim were once again in the goal scorers' list for BNM, while Inam netted the consolation goal for National HS.

Vinay tops group B

Vinay Katrela topped group B with a 4-1 win over Muddabir Ahmed and made the super league of the State-ranking snooker tournament at the McDowell Hall of the KSBA here on Friday. Vinay won 32-88, 76-15, 64-48, 52-42, 72-25. S. Prakash was the second player to qualify from this group.

Six players — two from each group — will join the five seeded players in the super league, which will commence from Sunday.

In group A, Ajay Bushan made the grade with a 4-0 rout of Vijay Goklani, who had stunned Balaji Reddy on Thursday. By virtue of a better frame score, M.S. Arun became the second player to qualify from this group ahead of Balaji.

Sunil Sharma's fluent 4-1 win over V. Anand ensured him the top spot in group C. Anand, however, made the grade as the second player from the group.

The results: Ajay Bushan bt Vijay S. Goklani 78-14, 72-71, 67-9, 82-4; Sunil Sharma bt V. Anand 55-51, 51-60, 92-4, 74-36, 76-3; Vinay Katrela bt Muddabir Ahmed 32-88, 76-15, 64-48, 52-42, 72-25.
