Hazare bundles out Bengal

MUMBAI: A five-wicket haul by Mumbai medium-pacer Swapnil Hazare triggered a Bengal collapse as the visitors were shot out for 171 on the opening day of their four-day Ranji Trophy Group `A' Elite encounter here on Friday. Mumbai was 50 for two before bad light ended the day's play.

Inserted on a bouncy, seaming wicket at the Wankhede Stadium, the Bengal innings ended at the stroke of tea with Hazare returning figures of five for 36.

Ably supporting him was Usman Malvi with three wickets.

For Bengal, No. 3 batsman Sourasish Lahiri top scored with a stubborn 49 (8x4, 1x6). Bengal hit back, sending the Mumbai openers Sahil Kukreja and Wasif Jaffer with just 13 on the board.

At Sirsa, it was Rana's day as he struck a century (121, 13x4, 1x6) to give Haryana's total some respectability (260) after it was tottering at 159 for nine against Baroda. The 101-run last wicket stand between Rana and Vashist (26 not out) was the highlight of the day's play.

Sairaj Bahutule (52 not out) and Munaf Patel (46) held the Maharashtra innings together after the side, asked to bat first, was reduced to 97 for six with debutant medium-pacer Mukesh Dewan taking three wickets. At stumps, Maharashtra was 183 for seven.

Gujarat bundled out defending champion Railways for a paltry 188 in New Delhi. Left-arm spinner Mukund Parmar (four for 41) and left-arm medium- pacer Ashraf Makda (three for 24) brought about Railway's downfall on a placid pitch.

But for a stout 81-run second-wicket partnership between opener Shankar Rao and skipper Sunjoy Bangar, Railways, which opted to bat, would have been in deeper trouble.
