  • Views India as economic giant, especially in IT
  • Considerable scope for partnership in biotechnology

CHENNAI: Thailand is keen on accessing India's expertise in information technology for developing its software industry.

This was announced by Chaithawat Saowapon, leader of the 23-member IT delegation from Thailand, that visited Bangalore and Chennai. He was addressing a meeting organised here on Thursday by the India-ASEAN-Sri Lanka Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The main objective of the mission was to seek India's support to develop IT related skills in Thailand and help its fledging IT industry gain more global access, he said. The emergence of India as an economic giant was making Thailand look forward to greater cooperation in a broad spectrum of industries. A press release said the delegation comprised senior officials from the Software Industry Promotion Agency of Thailand and businessmen.

Suphot Yanthukij, Consul General for Thailand in Chennai, said the setting up of the consulate here was an indicator of Thailand's growing interest in south India. Chamber president S.R. Dhruvan said the growing interest of Thailand in knowledge-based industries was a welcome departure, in the backdrop of its status as a manufacturing hub. The change would augur well for India's software sector.

Chamber director Sarat Chandran, who recently participated in the Asia Investment Forum in Bangkok, said more and more Thailand companies were seeking collaborations and joint ventures with the Indian IT companies. There was also considerable scope for Indian companies to partner with Thailand companies in the field of biotechnology.

    K. Gopalnathan, senior assistant general manager, Bharat Overseas Bank Limited, said it was the only private sector bank functioning in Thailand since 1973 and had considerable experience in dealing with different industries and trade.
