Constable killed in accident

Nagercoil: A police constable attached to the high way patrol wing was killed and two other police personnel sustained injuries in a road mishap in the early hours of Friday.

According to police sources, the police constable, Sasikumar of Bethelpuram near Monday Market along with the Sub-Inspector, Karunanidhi, and his colleague, Devasayagam, was checking vehicles near Aralvoimozi.

When he tried to stop a speedy mini-lorry laden with fish coming towards Nagercoil, the driver lost control and hit the highway patrol jeep, killing Sasikumar on the spot. Karunandhi and Devasagayam were rushed to hospital. The police have registered a case.

Fisherman's house burgled

Nagercoil: Police are on the look out for some unidentified persons who burgled the house of a fisherman on Thursday.

According to the police, Shayaraj of Arockiyapuram along with his relatives was fast asleep when some persons entered his house, broke open a suitcase and decamped with jewels worth Rs.2 lakhs. They also lifted a chain from his wife, Rani. When she raised a hue and cry, the burglars escaped under the cover of darkness.

Investigation is on.

Commits suicide

Nagercoil: A fisherman committed suicide by hanging himself inside his hut on Thursday night.

According to sources, Antony (60) of Cochin in Kerala was engaged in building a mechanised boat at Chinna Muttom near Kanyakumari.

Meanwhile he borrowed money from various sources to run his family. However, when unable to pay the amount, he took the extreme step.

The police sent the body for post-mortem. Investigation is going on.

Case against Municipal Commissioner

Tuticorin: The police on Friday registered a case against the Municipal Commissioner of Tuticorin, Kadhir Moideen, for allegedly making insulting remarks against one Selvaraj.

Police said Selvaraj, in his complaint, stated that he approached the Commissioner on Tuesday with an appeal to improve basic amenities at Ceylon Colony near Millerpuram.

Mr. Moideen insulted his caste and shouted at him, the complainant said.

Selvaraj, a native of Tiruchi, emigrated to Sri Lanka and then got repatriated to the country about 25 years ago. Since then he was staying in Ceylon Colony.

Police said the case against the official was filed under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

Man nabbed with explosives

Tuticorin: The police arrested Shumugasundaram on a charge of possessing explosives at Palayakayal on Thursday.

Police said aluminum and sulphur powder weighing 100 gm each were seized from the accused. He was remanded under the Explosives Act.

Jail term

Tuticorin: P. Pandurangan, a fast track court judge, sentenced Sadasivam to eight years of imprisonment for murdering his wife last month.

The accused murdered Vijayalakshmi at Ranimaharajapuram on November 22, owing to some differences. — Staff Reporter

Governor hails SHRC for spreading literacy

CHENNAI: Governor S.S. Barnala has praised the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) for spreading rights literacy among the people.

In his message on the eve of the International Human Rights Day being celebrated on Saturday, Mr. Barnala said it was a matter of great satisfaction for the people of Tamil Nadu to represent their grievances against violation of human rights to the SHRC and the National Human Rights Commission.

The increase in the filing of complaints from 2,162 in 1997 to 8,200 in 2005 showed the people's faith in the SHRC. It was heartening to note that the Commission had designed Human Rights Day greeting cards with appropriate slogans to propagate the message. People should take a vow to promote amity, communal harmony and universal brotherhood. — Special Correspondent

New Registrar-General for High Court

CHENNAI: S. Palanivelu, Principal District Judge, Madurai, has been appointed the new Registrar-General of the Madras High Court. He succeeds A.C. Arumugaperumal Adityan, who was elevated as Additional Judge of the High Court on Thursday, says a notification.

Through a separate notification, the High Court appointed a new Principal Judge for the Family Court here. P. Devadass, Special Judge for Exclusive Trial of Bomb Blast Cases, Poonamallee, has been posted as Principal Judge of the Family Court. K. Jayabalan, VII Additional Sessions Judge here, has been appointed II Additional Principal Judge, Family Court in Chennai. — Special Correspondent

Raja's bail plea rejected

MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Friday dismissed a bail application moved by educationist S.A. Raja in a murder case. He was accused of murdering Aladi Aruna, former Minister in the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government, in Tirunelveli on December 31 last. The Bench had earlier granted conditional bail to the accused on May 18. But, following an appeal moved by the prosecution, the Supreme Court on October 26 cancelled the bail and the accused surrendered before the Tenkasi Judicial Magistrate. — Staff Reporter

New members of Anna varsity syndicate

CHENNAI: The Chancellor, S.S. Barnala, has nominated S. Ravi, dean of the School of Architecture and Planning, and M. Raajenthiren, Professor of Chemical Engineering in Alagappa College of Technology, as members to the Syndicate of the Anna University.

They will be members for three years with effect from November 14, 2005, says a notification . — Special Correspondent

Special trains to Thiruvananthapuram

CHENNAI: The railways will operate special trains to meet the rush of passengers during Christmas. Train no. 0632 Thiruvananthapuram-Chennai Central special will leave Thiruvananthapuram at 7.45 p.m. on December 24, 26 and 30 and arrive at Chennai Central at 12.45 p.m. the next day. Train no. 0631 will leave Chennai Central at 4 p.m. on December 23, 25, 27 and 29 and arrive at Thiruvananthapuram at 7.30 a.m. the next day.

Train no.0634 Thiruvananthapuram-Chennai Central special will leave Thiruvananthapuram at 5.30 p.m. on December 22 and 28 and arrive at Chennai Central at 10.15 a.m. the next day. Train no. 0633 will leave Chennai Central at 5 p.m. on December 31 and arrive at Thiruvananthapuram at 9.45 a.m. the next day.

Reservation for the trains will begin on December 9, says a railway release. — Special Correspondent

Fishermen warned not to venture into sea

PUDUKOTTAI: The Fisheries Department has advised the fishermen in the district not to venture into the sea on Saturday as a precautionary measure as the cyclonic storm `Fanoos' is likely to cross between Nagapattinam and Chennai by noon.

Official sources here said both mechanised vessel and country boat fishermen had been cautioned that the sea would be rough.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 120.20 feet on Friday. The inflow was 9,586 cusecs, and the outflow 9,033 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

SHGs to run canteen ERODE: Two women self-help groups will run the canteen in the Collectorate from Saturday, said Collector D. Karthikeyan on Friday. He inaugurated the canteen and said that through the District Rural Development Agency, Rs. 1 lakh was granted for the canteen. The canteen would provide quality products to the Collectorate employees.
