Increase panchayat chiefs' tenure: Moily

MANGALORE: Former Chief Minister and Chairman of the National Administrative Reforms Commission M. Veerappa Moily has written to Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President M. Mallikarjun Kharge to restore the five-year term for presidents and vice-presidents of panchayats. In a letter to Mr. Kharge, which was released to the press here on Friday, Mr. Moily has appealed to the Congress "to undo a folly of the previous Janata Dal government". The 20-month tenure for panchayat presidents and vice-presidents will affect decentralisation of governance, he added. — Special Correspondent

Loans for buying solar water heaters

Bangalore: Canara Bank has introduced a scheme for financing purchase of solar water heaters at a concessional rate of interest with interest subsidy from the Union Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources. Under the scheme, the rate of interest for individuals is two per cent per annum, for institutional three per cent, and commercial and industrial users, including small and medium enterprises, five per cent, a bank statement said here. — Special Correspondent

Call to fight fundamentalists

MANGALORE: The Karnataka Komu Souharda Vedike has urged the Government to prevent fundamentalists from taking control of Bababudanagiri in Chikmagalur. Shivaramaiah of Bangalore, a writer, said here on Friday that fundamentalists are trying to destabilise society. He appealed to the Government to intervene to keep away groups that claim to be custodians of Bababudanagiri. He said Bababudangiri is a centre of pilgrimage for the poor, and the fundamentalists are bringing in strife by intimidating youth. — Special Correspondent

Exhibition

HUBLI: An exhibition and sale of household articles manufactured by women entrepreneurs and members of Stree Shakti self-help groups in the district will be organised at the Indira Glass House in Hubli from December 12 to December 14. Laparoscopy workshop

Belgaum: Belgaum-based Dakshata Hospitals Pvt. Ltd. will organise a live workshop on laparoscopic surgery for two days for the benefit of surgeons and gynaecologists here. According to a release here on Thursday, the workshop will be inaugurated on Saturday. About 100 eminent laparoscopic surgeons, gynaecologists from major cities, including Bangalore, Mumbai and Kolhapur, will conduct operations live. De-addiction camp

Belgaum: HOPE Recovery Centre will organise a free de-addiction treatment camp in cooperation with the Department of Women and Child Development for victims of alcoholism at BC 75, Jamalpur Road, here from December 10 to December 20. The programme includes medical treatment, individual and family counselling, yoga therapy and exercises, inter-religious prayers, anonymous meetings with alcoholics and re-educative lectures. Belgaum: Supriya Nerli, Associate Professor, Department of Prosthodontics, KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Belgaum, has been elected Executive Council Member, Indian Prosthodontic Society, for two years. Her election came about at the IPS conference in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, recently. Succumbs to injuries

MYSORE: A youth who suffered head injuries in a mishap near Srirangapatana on Thursday died in the early hours of Friday. The victim was identified as Kiran, a resident of Vijayanagar. The mishap occurred when he was knocked down by an unidentified vehicle near Baburayanakoppal. The pillion rider Chandru, who was also injured, was shifted to a private hospital.

Youth drama festival

HASSAN: The Department of Kannada and Culture will be holding a `Youth Drama Festival' in association with the Southern Region Cultural Centre on December 15 and 16, according to a press release. Deputy Commissioner K.H. Ashwathanarayana Gowda will inaugurate the festival and Chief Executive Officer of zilla panchayat, Hassan, will preside over. Student commits suicide

HASSAN: Sandeep (24), who was an MCA student in Hassan, committed suicide by hanging at his house on Thursday. The police said he had committed suicide owing to frustration. Sandeep was the son of a police constable. — Staff Correspondent

Plea for nod to erect statue

DAVANGERE: The Davangere Zilla Panchayat has sent a letter to the Government, seeking permission to erect a statue of late J.H. Patel, former Chief Minister, at a cost of Rs. 6 lakhs. In the letter, Chief Executive Officer of the panchayat Jitendra Naik has said that its dissolved body had on June 29 taken a unanimous decision to put up the statue in front of the office. And a quotation of Rs. 5 lakhs was secured from a sculptor. An amount of Rs. 1 lakh is required for constructing a platform. The plan is to erect a full-size bronze statue, which will be 8-ft. tall, using the panchayat's building fund. — Staff Correspondent

Aero-engineering institute by 2007

BANGALORE: An Aero-engineering and Management Institute, mooted by the Society of Indian Aerospace Technologies and Industries (SIATI), will be set up here by 2007, according to SIATI president C.G. Krishnadas Nair. The Rs. 20-crore multidisciplinary institute will have a 20-acre campus with a hostel. "We are looking at 3,000 students at a time on campus," he told presspersons here on Thursday.

The institute will have an advisory committee comprising personnel from airline companies, Air Traffic Control (ATC), the aerospace industry and the tourism sector. — Staff Reporter

Governor, Chief Minister visit Tirumala

Tirumala: Governor T.N. Chaturvedi, Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh and Deputy Chief Minister M.P. Prakash on Friday worshipped at Sri Venkateswara Temple here. The dignitaries were at Tirumala to participate in the inauguration of Karnataka Bhavan, renovated at a cost of Rs. 3.60 crores. Afterwards, the Chief Minister and the Governor, who arrived at the Renigunta airport by a special aircraft, left from there at 2.15 p.m. — UNI

Capt. Gopinath gets award

BANGALORE: Air Deccan Managing Director G.R. Gopinath was recently awarded the coveted Galileo Express Travel and Tourism Editor's Choice Award for 2005. The award recognised the efforts that Capt. Gopinath had put in developing the low-cost air carrier and in starting a completely new business model, said an Air Deccan press release. The award was handed over at a function in Mumbai on December 7.

The Galileo Express Travel and Tourism Awards were instituted in 2003 by Galileo India, along with Express Travel and Tourism from the Business Publications Division of the Indian Express group, to reward companies and individuals with expertise in the Indian travel industry. — Staff Reporter

Two officials given additional charge

Bangalore: V. Umesh, Regional Commissioner, Belgaum Division, has been given additional responsibility as Development Commissioner of the division.

Sindhia to visit Uttara Kannada, Dharwad

HUBLI: Finance Minister P.G.R. Sindhia will visit Dharwad and Uttara Kannada districts on Saturday, according to an official release. Mr. Sindhia will arrive here on Saturday morning and leave for Kumta. He will return to Hubli in the evening and leave for Bangalore at night, the release said. — Staff Correspondent

Utsav exhibition from December 22

MANGALORE: A consumer fair, an amusement park and a food enclosure, all part of Karavali Utsav, will start functioning at the exhibition grounds here from December 22. The utsav itself will begin on December 30. The exhibition will be open for 45 days, and every day there will be cultural programmes organised at the venue. There will be special entertainment programmes for the youth.

KPCC donates Rs. 50 lakhs

BANGALORE: The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has donated Rs. 50 lakhs to those affected by the earthquake in Jammu and Kashmir. KPCC President M. Mallikarjun Kharge told presspersons here on Friday that a cheque for the amount will be handed over to Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Monday in New Delhi. Congress legislators donated one month's salary to the fund.

Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh greeted Ms. Gandhi on her birthday on Friday, said a press note. — Special Correspondent
