560 sensitive, 550 very sensitive booths identified in Bangalore Rural district

40 zilla panchayat and 151 taluk panchayat seats at stake in elections


BANGALORE: In the light of the violence that occurred during the last Assembly and Lok Sabha elections, the authorities concerned have identified 560 sensitive and 550 very sensitive polling booths in Bangalore Rural district. The district will go to the polls on December 23 to elect 40 zilla panchayat and 151 taluk panchayat members.

Deputy Commissioner G.V. Kongawad told presspersons here on Friday that the very sensitive booths are in Hoskote taluk (115), Magadi taluk (97), Kanakapura (77), Doddballapur (73), Channapatna (55), Devanahalli (48), Nelamangala (44) and Ramanagaram (41). Besides, 1,686 scheduled polling booths, 185 additional booths will be set up, he said. The district comprising eight taluks has 12,31,057 voters. There are 182 contestants for the 40 zilla panchayat seats. The parties and the number of candidates fielded are as follows: Congress - 39, Bharatiya Janata Party - 33, Janata Dal (Secular) - 40, Bahujan Samaj Party - 17, All-India Progressive Janata Dal - 4, Republican Party of India - 1, Samajwadi Party - 20 and independents - 28.

For the 151 taluk panchayat seats, the Congress, the BJP, the JD(S), the BSP and the SJP have fielded 148, 76, 150, 48 and 50 candidates respectively. Apart from them, there are 42 independents, one Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate, five AIPJD candidates and three RPI candidates.

Mr. Kongawad said the district authorities have issued identity cards to over 82 per cent of the voters. The rest can produce any official document, including telephone bill, RTC, driving licence or ration card as proof of identity, he added.

Bangalore Rural Superintendent of Police K. Srinivas explained the security measures taken to ensure free and fair polling.
