Cyclone: heavy rain likely in south coast

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The cyclonic storm has moved away towards Tamil Nadu but the threat of heavy rain looms large over the south Coastal Andhra under its impact.

After sluggishly covering a distance of 150 km, the cyclonic storm lay over the southwest Bay of Bengal about 400 km southeast of Chennai on Friday. A bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department says that it will intensify further and move in west-northwesterly direction and cross the coast between Nagapattanam and Chennai on Saturday.

Nellore, Prakasam, Chittoor and Kadapa districts have been warned of isolated heavy rain. As such, the present alert to these districts is continued by the Government with instructions to their Collectors to take the necessary precautionary steps. Fishermen, especially those of the Nellore coastline, have been warned against going into the sea which will be "rough".
