IA flights for Tirupati

HYDERABAD: Indian Airlines will operate a daily flight from Hyderabad to Tirupati and back starting January 1, 2006. In a statement issued here on Friday, TTD Chairman T. Subbarami Reddy said he had discussed the issue with Union Minister for Civil Aviation Praful Patel and the IA Chairman and it was agreed to operate the flights from New Year. - Staff Reporter

KADAPA: All-India Congress Committee president Sonia Gandhi is committed to uplift of the common man, Kadapa DCC president A. Amarnath Reddy has said.

Honour for Dean

TIRUPATI: Mohd. Hafeez, dean of veterinary science at the newly-established Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University has been admitted as national fellow of Indian Association for Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology, in recognition of his services in the fields of teaching, research and extension. Sentenced to RI

Nellore: The IV Judicial First Class Magistrate, Nellore, P.R. Rajiv, on Thursday, has sentenced Sh. Anwar, to six months RI and levied a fine of Rs. 1,000.

Belonging to Venkateswarapuram area of Nellore town, he befriended a girl studying in the local Arabic school. When she was deceived and wanted him to marry her, Anwar demanded Rs. 2 lakhs. Thereupon a complaint was lodged with the rural police on December 2, 2002. - Staff Reporter

Dharna by postal staff

Nellore: Functionaries of the district unit of National Federation of Postal Employees (NFPE) have opposed the move by the Central Government to privatise postal services and observed a dharna before the Head Post Office and other post offices of Nellore town, on Friday. Two houses burgled

Nellore: Unidentified culprits forced their entry into a house in Juvvaladinne village of Bogole mandal on Thursday night and manhandled a couple before taking away ornaments worth about Rs. 50,000. According to information, the culprits were wearing masks and one of them spoke in Telugu. Farm worker commits suicide

Kakinada: A farm worker Yadala Prasad (22) reportedly committed suicide by consuming a pesticide at his home in Ganganapalli village of Kakinada rural mandal on Thursday night. Domestic problems were said to have led him to the extreme step. The Indrapalem police have registered the case. - Correspondent

ID liquor destroyed,

18 arrested

WARANGAL: Excise personnel conducted massive raids in 30 villages of Narasampet division and arrested 18 persons and registered 20 cases. According to Narasampet Excise CI P. Srinivasa Rao, the personnel destroyed 265 litres of illicitly distilled (ID) liquor and 7,250 litres of fermented jaggery wash. - Staff Reporter

KADAPA: Six persons of Nandimandalam in Pendlimarry mandal, charged with illicit felling and hoarding of red sander logs in Idupulapaya beat in Vempalle forest range, were sentenced to imprisonment for four months by Lakkireddipalle Judicial First Class Magistrate on Friday. The accused persons were caught for cutting and stocking 104 red sander logs weighing 1,803 kg worth Rs. 1.26 lakhs. - Staff Reporter

Nellore: Forest officials of Venkatagiri town seized a lorry allegedly carrying 120 logs of red sanders, worth around Rs. 4 lakhs. Acting on a tip-off, they intercepted the vehicle at Nadimpalli village of Dakkili mandal and seized the vehicle, which was said to be transporting the material from Velugonda forests. However, the offenders escaped after abandoning the lorry. - Staff Reporter

Support for panchayat raj staff agitation

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Revenue Services' Association has extended support to the agitation of the Panchayati Raj Ministerial Employees' Organisation. K. Laxmaiah, president, and N. Ananda Rao, general secretary, in a statement issued here on Friday said the grant-in-aid demand of the employees did not entail any expenditure. They criticised the administration for paying salaries to the employees once in four months, while citing reasons for the support.

Former Minister

passes away

ANANTAPUR: Former Minister S. Ramachandra Reddy (64) passed away in Hyderabad after a brief illness on Friday. Reddy was Minister on the cabinet of N.T. Rama Rao and was elected as MP from the Hindupur constituency. A popular BCs leader, Reddy joined the Congress on the eve of byelection to the Penugonda Assembly seat due to changing political equations in the district. The body was brought to his native village Rampur. - Staff Reporter

Yash Chopra releases cookery book

Mumbai: Veteran film director Yash Chopra released a cookery book which "documents" culinary experience of 85-year-old Subhadra Krishna Rao Parigi of Andhra Pradesh. She is the eldest child of former President V.V. Giri. The 87-page book titled `Cooking at home with Peddathha' is actually written by Jigyasa Giri and Pratibha Jain, who said that their job was merely of `documenting.' The book, published by Chennai-based Pritya publishing house, is priced at Rs. 450. - PTI

Scrapping of fringe benefit tax sought

HYDERABAD: The Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FAPCCI) has urged the Centre to scrap the fringe benefit tax (FBT) as it is taxing the industry heavily. FBT includes most of the expenses which are genuine business expenses and several industries are finding it impossible to implement the provisions correctly in spite of their best intentions, the FAPCCI said. It wanted the Government to abolish the concept of banking cash transaction tax or provide a treatment on the lines of TDS, besides enhancing the limit of transaction to Rs. 10 lakhs. - Special Correspondent
