Body of Keralite killed in Italy to be brought tomorrow

Staff Reporter

The karate instructor was working as security guard

THRISSUR: The mortal remains of Tharayil Rajan Jacob of Kuriachira, near here, who was murdered in Italy on August 19 last, will be flown back home on Sunday.

According to information received by his family here, the body was taken out of the freezer and was kept in public in Italy to enable his friends and relatives there to pay their last respects on Friday. It will be flown from Italy at 10 a.m. on Saturday and expected to reach Nedumbassery via Abu Dhabi at 9 a.m. on Sunday.

The body is expected to reach home at 11 a.m., and arrangements have been made to perform the last rites at St. Joseph's Church, Kuriachira at 12.30 noon on Sunday, according to family sources.

Unknown assailant

The 42-year-old Rajan was a karate instructor and he was killed while working as a security guard in a rich architect's house in Rome.

The architect and his family were away on a vacation when the unknown assailants carried out the burglary.

The body of Rajan was found lying in a pool of blood with five stab injuries on his body on the next day of the burglary attempt.

The shocked family of Rajan had been making desperate attempts to get his body flown back home since then. Initially the family could not raise the huge mount required for transporting the body here.

Later Malayali Association president Sibi Kumaramangalam and a friend Pauly Kanamkudan jointly mobilised the required amount. Then there were also problems in getting the No Objection Certificate (NOC) for shifting the body out of Italy because Rajan's passport was missing.

It was after great lobbying by Mr. Kumaramangalam and Mr. Kanamkudan that the Indian Embassy there issued the NOC.

Family's plight

Meanwhile, the financial position of Rajan's family was also fast deteriorating. Rajan-Nisha couple have three children with the eldest one being only 15 years old. Rajan was the only earning member in the family. Ms. Nisha Rajan and the three children have now moved out of their house to her mother's house as they cannot afford the rent.

Paying the fee for the education of children has also become a question mark. Ms. Nisha Rajan has now taken a small job in a private firm in Thrissur to support the family.
