Social responsibility helps corporates

Staff Reporter

Green Business Summit-2005 concludes

HYDERABAD: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) makes good business sense and will pave the way for increased investments, said J.J. Irani, past chairman, Confederation of Indian Industry and Director, Tata Sons.

At the valedictory of Green Business Summit-2005 here on Friday, he dwelt at length on CSR and recalled how the Tata Group's social initiatives had actually helped it in the long run.

He made specific mention of it in a region of erstwhile Bihar, now in Jharkhand, even the People's War naxalites had left Tata Steel alone because they had the faith of the local people.

Continuing to make a strong pitch on why CSR should become an integral part of a corporate's normal activity, he said in the days to come CSR would serve as a motivator for employees too apart from making investors, customers and people to come forward in support of industrial growth.

Ultimately it would be society that would accord sanctions for industries to come up and not vice-versa, he said.

Dwelling on Tata's initiatives, Mr. Irani said Jamshedpur had many firsts to its credit.
