Titles conferred on three artists

Justice V.S. Sirpurkar commends Chennaiites for promoting fine arts

CHENNAI : The Nungambakkam Cultural Academy Trust on Friday conferred the titles `Sangeetha Kala Siromani', `Nrithya Kala Siromani' and `Nataka Kala Siromani' on Seshampati T. Sivalingam, nadhaswaram artist; Bhargavi Gopalan, Bharatanatyam danseuse; and Thillai Rajan, Tamil drama artist.

The titles carry a purse of Rs.10,000, gold medallion and citation.

Outstanding contributions

The citations said the honour was in recognition of their outstanding contributions to Carnatic music, Bharatanatyam and Tamil theatre.

Conferring the titles on the artists and inaugurating the Trust's 36th Anniversary and Fine Arts Festival, V.S. Sirpurkar, Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, paid tributes to Chennai and its citizens for preserving and promoting fine arts.

3 best months

December to February were the three best months in the social life of Chennai. There were several cultural programmes.

Mr. Justice Sirpurkar complimented the artists for their involvement and dedication.

A. Natarajan, former Director, Chennai Doordarshan, was among those who offered their felicitations.

Report presented

Presenting a brief report of the academy, S.Natarajan, trust general secretary, said it gave due importance to music, dance and Tamil theatre.

Trust president Nalli Kuppusami Chetti said this year's festival would be held till January 11.
