BJP rejects allegations against Vajpayee

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Jaswant Singh, on Friday rejected as baseless the allegations and insinuations that a "close associate" and kin of the former Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, was closely associated with one of the sons of the former Iraqi President, Saddam Hussain, and had made deals in oil vouchers. "We condemn the manner in which such rumours have been spread," he said. However, Mr. Singh, who addressed a press conference here on Friday, was mainly focussed on the party's latest demand on Volcker, that there should be a joint parliamentary committee going into it, a demand the party made in both Houses of Parliament.

Asked whether by this they were in fact demanding that the Pathak Inquiry Authority be wound up, Mr. Singh said it had not yet started the work. In short, he suggested that if the JPC were to be set up there was no harm in winding up the Pathak Inquiry Authority.
