Labour intensive techniques need to be discarded, says expert "Infrastructure development in the country is much lower compared to China"

TAMBARAM: Labour intensive techniques need to be discarded in favour of modern construction technologies and mechanisation on a large scale, according to A. Ramakrishna, adviser, Larsen and Toubro Limited.

He was speaking at a three-day international conference on recent advances in concrete and construction technology at S.R.M. Engineering College, Kattankulathur.

Dr. Ramakrishna said modern technologies and large-scale mechanisation had to be adopted to meet the targets of Vision 2020.

The construction industry employed three crore people, many of them unskilled labourers.

Stress on awareness

P. Sathyanarayanan, Vice-Chancellor, SRM Institute of Technology, stressed the need for awareness among students about the importance and scope of civil engineering.
