CHENNAI: The 6th annual meeting of the International Network for Cancer Treatment and Research (INCTR) will be held here from Saturday to Monday. The focus of this year's meeting is cancers common to south Asia namely cervical, breast and oral cancer. In addition, discussion on childhood cancers, palliative care and emerging technologies for control and management of the disease will also be a feature of the meet. The INCTE is a non-profit organisation addressing cancer control in developing nations through the development of infrastructure for cancer treatment and research. For this it collaborates with physicians and scientists in such countries to take advantage of the unique opportunities to improve the understanding of genetic and environmental factors that predispose various types of cancer.
Collaboration
The Network emphasises international collaboration and works to improve communication among the range of professionals and volunteers to control cancer globally. Among the programmes it has established in India is the multi-centre study group for childhood Acute Lymphobastic Leuekia (ALL) - a form of blood cancer that is potentially curable. The programme aims at improving the cure rates in this cancer, which currently around 50 per cent, from about 15 per cent in 1983, the meet organisers note. The cure rates improved by using a protocol formulated by Dr.I. Magrath, the president, INCTR, and Dr.V. Shantha, director of the Cancer Institute. More than 300 delegates including 125 international participants are expected to attend the meet. The annual awards for outstanding contributions to cancer control by individuals from poorer countries, and the award for outstanding contribution to Oncology from the resource rich country would also be presented in the 3-day session.
