Rajaji birth anniversary

CHENNAI: The commemoration of Rajaji's 127th birth anniversary will be held at the Image Auditorium in MRC Nagar, R.A.Puram on December 10 at 6.30 p.m. The venue earlier announced was Rajaji Memorial in Guindy. However, on Friday, the government withdrew the permission granted earlier, stating that flood-affected persons had been sheltered at the memorial and maintenance work was on.

Condemning the withdrawal of permission, DMK treasurer Arcot N Veerasamy, in a statement, said that the permission was deliberately withdrawn as the DMK chief M. Karunanidhi, was to be honoured by the Rajaji Foundation. "Persons who visited the (Gandhi Mandapam) premises did not see any flood-affected persons there," Mr Veerasamy said.

RBI fiat

to banks

The Reserve Bank of India has told all banks maintaining currency chests that their branches should accept coins of all denominations from the public for deposit/exchange. An RBI release here said that if people face problems in transacting with coins at such banks, they can report to the General Manager, Issue Department, Reserve Bank of India, Rajaji Salai, Chennai -1. RBI's Chennai office also accepts coins for exchange without limit.

Meet on bio-fuel

conversion

The IIT Madras has scheduled an Indo-Swedish workshop on bio-fuel conversion from December 14-16.

The workshop, with resource persons from Sweden and India, will focus on combustion and gasification of biomass and solid waste. For details, call 22574653.

Chartered train

to Mysore

Lions Club International District 324 A5 has chartered a train for 550 members and their families to travel to Mysore on an image building exercise.

A programme for orphans has been planned at Mysore as part of the trip. An AIDS awareness campaign will also be held. The train is scheduled to leave Chennai at 6.30 p.m. on December 9.

Workshop on

arts and crafts

The Velammal International School will conduct a two-day workshop on arts and crafts. The event is to be held on December 10th and 11th in the school premises. Students will be taught glass painting, oil and watercolour painting, balloon mask making and still life drawing.

Painting, essay contests

About 300 volunteers of the Anna University and affiliated colleges recently participated in painting and essay contests on AIDS awareness and prevention. An awareness walk from Oorapakkam to BSA Crescent Engineering College was also held.

Contributions

to relief fund

Members of the All India Teachers' Peravai will contribute a day's salary each to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund for flood-affected people, association secretary C George said in a release here.
