DOING IT WITH APLOMB: A ballet by special children in Hyderabad on Friday.
HYDERABAD: Enacting the `navarasas' or the nine emotions has been a favourite theme of most dance artistes. The dance troupe comprising children who were impaired in hearing interpreted the navarasas in the way they knew best, by speaking out their hearts. Drawing on scenes from the Ramayana, children from the Durgabai Deshmukh Vocational Training and Rehabilitation Centre for Handicapped enacted the emotions at a programme in Sundarayya Vignan Kendram on Friday. The veera rasa saw men performing feats to win the hand of Sita, the Sringaara rasa, depicted in rich colours showed Rama and Sita in happy union. The haasya rasa evoked laughter as the Vanaras pranced around Rama who was heartbroken as Sita was taken away from him. The emotions were rendered in such a manner that they blended smoothly into each other, culminating in the Shanta rasa where Rama and Sita are united once more. Additional Secretary, Department of Culture and Tourism, Dr. Ananda Shankar Jayant commended the simplicity in approach, the aesthetic choice of costumes and the colourful backdrops. Commissioner of the Department of Disabled Welfare, R. Sundarvadan, advised Andhra Mahila Sabha, which organised the programme, to take up community-based rehabilitation in addition to the institution-based work that it was doing. Former Governor V.S. Rama Devi and Andhra Mahila Sabha president, Akkamma Krishnamurthy also attended the function. Abanty Chakraborty directed the ballet.
