UNIQUE COMBINATION: The Indian Navy Band performing at the Southern Naval Command in Kochi on Friday. Photo: Mahesh Harilal
KOCHI : ``We leave the auditorium with our souls embellished,'' said Vice Admiral S.C.S. Bangara, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Naval Command, after listening to a 90-minute performance by the Naval Band held on Friday night at the Naval Base here. True to what he said the band played numerous tunes, Western, melodies and classical. This was the first performance by the SNC band as a composite, symphonic concert band. The band was led by Captain P.G. George, Director of Music, Indian Navy. The concert began with `The light cavalry overture', which depicts the charge of a brave cavalry brigade in an onslaught against roaring artillery guns, followed by `Two imps' a duet and `Flying Fancy', a trio on xylophone. Then came `Beautiful Danube', the popular Viennese waltz. This was followed by our own and Gandhji's favourite `Vaishnava janato tene kahiye', intermingled with a few jugal bandhis. What followed was Hindi melody. `Chinna chinna asai' of Roja fame was played solo over the saxophone, followed by the Malayalam song, `Karale karale' from the movie Udayananu Taaram. A few numbers from Michael Jackson and the tune of `Anchors aweigh' (which is played by Navies across the globe when ships weigh their anchor) followed. The concert came to a close with a video projection of specially compiled visuals, while students of the Navy Children School sang `Desh Rakshak', which is the essence of jointmanship. With `Sare jahan se acha' and the national anthem, the event concluded.
