IAF's Air Show 2005 on Sunday

To feature Surya Kirans, sky diving

Thiruvananthapuram: The Air Show 2005 of the Indian Air Force would start at Shangumugham beach on December 11 morning. A 20-minute aerobatic display by the Surya Kiran team, low level fly-past by AN-32 transport aircraft, slithering operations by troops from MI-8 helicopters and sky diving by the "Air Devil" team are the highlights of the Air Show.

At a press conference here on Thursday, Air Marshal S.Y. Savur, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Air Command requested the public to desist from bringing food items to the venue of the air-show. Scavenger birds, attracted by food, are hazardous to jets executing low-level manoeuvres.

Air Vice Marshal A.S. Karnik said birds could be sucked into the jet's engine through the air-intake. In such an eventuality, the chances of an engine failure, "flame out," is quite high.

"In single jet trainers such as the Surya Kirans, the pilot would have no option but to eject in the event of an engine failure," he said.

Air Commodore K.K. Vijayakumar warned that the "downwash" of the helicopters involved in the "slithering operation" could stir up considerable amount of sand. He said there would be a commentary of the proceedings for the public.
