Meeting to discuss parking problem

Thiruvananthapruam: The Government has convened a high-level meeting to discuss the parking of four wheelers and two wheelers and the proposal to increase the circulating area in the central railway station here on December 16. Railway sources said Minister for Transport N. Shaktan, Divisional Railway Manager S. Vijayakumaran and top Government and railway officials would attend the meeting to be held at the Secretariat. — Staff Reporter

Counter closed

Thiruvananthapuram: The fair price drug counter at SAT hospital will remain closed for three days till Monday on account of the stock verification being carried out as part of the investigation into the pilferage of drugs from the counter, SAT Supreintendent K. Rajmohan has said. — Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: Special assemblies of students will be organised in every district headquarters as part of Gita Jayanthi celebrations on December 11. The students from schools run by various institutions including the Amritanandamayi Mission, the Chinmaya Mission, the Sri Ramakrishna Mission, the Sri Sarada mission and the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan will assemble at a specified venue at 8 a.m. on that day and will collectively chant the 12th chapter of the Gita , a press note issued here on Friday said. — Staff Reporter

Vigilance raids reveal

fraud by quarry owners

Thiruvananthapuram: The Vigilance & Anti-Corruption Bureau has detected a total shortfall of Rs.1.9 crores in the royalty paid by granite quarry owners to the Government following State-wide raids on quarries. The raids were conducted on the basis of a tip-off that a section of quarry owners were mining quantities in excess of the quota fixed for them with the connivance of some Mining & Geology Department officials. The raids were conducted in one quarry in each of the 14 districts. — Special Correspondent

Study team's clarification

Thiruvananthapuram: The study team from the Department of Anthropology, Delhi University, has said that the team was carrying out a social survey, including certain basic tests such as blood grouping and taste sensitivity test using the compound PTC (phenyl thiocarbamide), among the tribal people and backward classes in Amboori and Neyyardam as part of the research studies being undertaken by postgraduate students. Sanction had been obtained from the school authorities before conducting the study and no medical investigations were carried out, a spokesperson for the team clarified. — Staff Reporter
