NEW DELHI: It was a big birthday bash without the `guest of honour' at 10 Janpath here on Friday. With flags, posters and drums, a large number of folk dancers gathered outside the residence of United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi early in the morning hoping to wish her on her birthday. But they were all disappointed when they learnt that she was away in Kashmir spending time with the quake victims.

Making their presence felt in numbers, the folk dancers had come from as far as Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and other States to celebrate Ms. Gandhi's birthday. A colourful gathering that started assembling from early in the morning, many finally had to make do with clicking their pictures outside the gate of Ms. Gandhi's residence. Most folk dancers were brought to the Capital by their local leaders to add colour to the celebrations.

Seva Dal volunteers were also present in strength carrying party flags and wanting to show their loyalty to Ms. Gandhi.
