BANGALORE: The K.R. Puram police on Friday arrested a 60-year-old woman and her three accomplices, all women, who had allegedly stolen a bag containing Rs. 10 lakhs in cash from Syndicate Bank's K.R. Puram branch on Tuesday.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (K.R. Puram) R. Lakshman told presspersons that investigation had revealed that some employees of the bank had connived with the arrested and their two male accomplices who are at large. The interrogation of the absconding men would reveal the identities of the bank employees who helped them, he said.

Mr. Lakshman said the accused were part of a 40-member gang from Malur that stole money from various banks across the State after diverting the attention of customers. The Mandya West police recently arrested 10 members of the gang and they were in Mandya prison, he said.

On a tip-off, the police raided a house at Chikkapura in Malur taluk of Kolar district in the early hours of Thursday when the accused were sharing the stolen money. On seeing the police, two of the accused, Venkatesh and Ravi, ran away, he said.

The police arrested four women, Sukanya (40), owner of the house, Lakshmamma (60), Sarojamma (35) and Hema (26) and recovered Rs. 6.20 lakhs in cash from them. Lakshmamma is the leader of the gang, Mr. Lakshman said.

As the police raided the house around 2 a.m. some women ran out of the house and created a scene. Hundreds of people gathered near the house and tried to prevent the police from discharging their duty.
