ERODE: Timely action averted a major disaster here. Villagers noticed a breach on Friday in the Sanjeevirayar tank near Athani. The water was flowing into a 30-acre land nearby. Officials of the Public Works Department and Gobichettipalayam tahsildar took immediate steps to plug the breach. The tank has been designed to store 24.31 million cubic feet (mcft) of water and the level is 7 meters. It occupies nearly 100 acres and receives rainwater from Anthiyur forest areas, Sanjeevirayar hill and its surroundings areas for cultivation of paddy and sugarcane raised over 900 acres. K.R. Kandasamy, Sathyamangalam MLA, on Friday inspected the plugging work. He commended the timely action taken by the PWD officials. He said due to rain in Sathyamangalam and Thalawady, many roads were damaged. Now in Thalawady road repair works and laying of new roads had been undertaken.
