Tongas are back

Staff Correspondent

IN VOGUE: A tonga

MYSORE: Theatre buffs and artistes who have gathered in Mysore from different parts of the country for the national theatre festival, Bahuroopi 2005, are clearly fascinated by horse-drawn carriages, or tongas, as they are called in local parlance, trotting on the roads of Mysore.

The tongas have not only become the preferred mode of transport for stage artistes, who have arrived in Mysore from many regions, but are also being used by the organisers of festival — Rangayana, a theatre repertoire — to ferry artistes for street plays held at a host of locations across the city.

Bahuroopi has provided tongawallahs of Mysore, who struggle for a living, many patrons.
