PANAJI: The Coconut Development Board has offered all assistance to Goa to set up coconut processing industries and to enhance coconut cultivation. Minnie Mathew, Chairman of the board, told presspersons here on Friday that Goa has immense potential to set up coconut processing industries. She has spoken to Goa Development Commissioner J.K. Dadu and offered all assistance for such ventures in the State, she added. She said though coconut is an important commercial crop after cashew in Goa, the productivity level continues to be low. Here too, the board is willing to offer subsidy and other schemes, including irrigation and technological assistance, to growers to adopt scientific cultivation methods. The productivity level continues to be as low as 4,818 nuts/ha, which is far below the national average of 6,847 nuts/ha. The area under coconut cultivation in the country has reached 1.91 million/ha. The production has reached 12 billion nuts as against 1.06 million/ha and 5,545million nuts, respectively, in 1981, Ms. Mathew said.
