Move to include education in GATS opposed

Staff Correspondent

It will lead to commercialisation of education, says ABVP

HUBLI: Activists of the Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a dharna in front of the office of the tahsildar against the move to include the education sector in the General Agreement on Trade in Services of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

They submitted a memorandum addressed to the Prime Minister to the tahsildar. Addressing the activists, Mahendra Kautal, convenor of the district unit of the ABVP, said that in the WTO ministerial meeting to be held in Hong Kong from December 13, the possibilities of including the education sector in GATS are more.

Education is considered as a service in the country. If the Union Government signs the agreement, it will lead to commercialisation of education, the leaders said. They urged the Union Government not to be part of such an agreement.

If the Union Government signs the agreement, the ABVP will launch a nationwide protest, they said.

Suhas Kalghatgi, Sudhir Sonone and Ajeya Joshi, office-bearers of the ABVP, participated in the agitation.
