SHG animators get cell phones

VELLORE: With women self-help groups growing in numbers, thanks to promotional efforts of the State Government, they have felt the need for cell phones in order to make business contacts to buy products and sell them through their outlets and improve their earnings.

Animators of the Karpagam, Poocharam, Vannamalar, Bharathiar, Ganga, Annai Curie, Mahalakshmi and Annai Teresa women SHGs in the District Supply and Marketing Society, Vellore, were all smiles when the Agriculture Minister, K. Pandurangan, distributed cell phones to them at a function held in Odugathur in Anaicut constituency on Friday. The cell phones were distributed through the District Rural Development Agency. Mr. Pandurangan said the Government and the banks were helping the women to improve their economic conditions and empower them economically through loans and subsidy to set up income-generating ventures.

He appealed to the girl students to avail themselves of the concessions given by the Government. Mr. Pandurangan also distributed cycles totally worth Rs.27.37 lakhs to 1548 Adi Dravida, tribal, backward class and most backward class students studying in eight higher secondary schools at functions held in Ussoor, Poigai, Virinjipuram, Pallikonda, Anaicut and Odugathur on Friday.

The beneficiaries included 1007 boys and 541 girls.
