Railway employee found dead

ERODE: Police are searching for three persons, including a woman, in connection with the murder of a railway employee. According to police, Siddan, 56, was working as Chief Technician in the electrical loco shed and living in the new Railway quarters. On Friday the police received information that Siddan was found dead hanging inside the house. The police noticed some bloodstains and said that Siddan was a paralytic who could not commit suicide by hanging. They suspect that Saroja, wife of the deceased, along with her paramour could have killed him with the help of a mercenary. Search is on. - Staff Reporter

Moderate inflow

ERODE : Bhavanisagar Reservoir is receiving moderate inflow and the discharge into Bhavani has increased. For the past ten days the level of the Lower Bhavani Reservoir has been maintained at 104 feet against the full level of 105 feet. On Saturday due to rain in the catchment areas, the reservoir is receiving 2,747 cusecs and the level being 103.95 feet with 31 tmc feet in its storage. Three thousand cusecs have been discharged into Bhavani River and 2,000 cusecs into the LBP canal. Erode received 5 mm of rain, Dharapuram and Perundurai 3 mm each and Bhavani 2.8 mm. - Staff Reporter

Road roko demanding flood relief

PUDUKOTTAI: In separate incidents, a group of people numbering over 200 resorted to road roko at Gandarvakottai in the district on Saturday demanding flood relief to them. Police said that around 100 residents of Akachipatti village, including 40 women, squatted on the Gandarvakottai - Pattukottai road urging the administration authorities to disburse flood relief to them. Similarly, more than 125 residents of Mandela Nagar blocked the road near the Gandarvakottai bus stand this evening. They disbursed after officials rushed to the spot and assured to look into their demand.

Power shutdown

PUDUKOTTAI: There will be no power supply in the following areas between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on December 13 in the following areas owing to the maintenance work at Pudukottai Town I Feeder: Thirukokarnam, Thilagar Thidal, Machuvadi, North Main Street, Kamarajapuram, Ganesh Nagar, Bose Nagar, Ayyanarpuram, Gandhi Nagar, Usilangulam, Ashok Nagar, Sathiyamoorthy Nagar, Nizam Colony, Kalif Nagar and Golden Nagar.

Woman dies in wall collapse

PUDUKOTTAI: Ramamirtham, a 50-year-old woman was killed in a wall collapse at Ponpethi near Thirupanavasal in the district on Saturday. Police said a portion of the wall of the tiled house collapsed following rains and fell on the woman leading to her death.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The water level in the Mettur dam stood at 120.20 feet on Saturday. The inflow was 9579 cusecs and the outflow, 9026 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Trains cancelled

CHENNAI: In view of heavy rain in Cuddalore and Nagapattinam districts, the following will be the pattern of metre gauge train services on December 11. Virudhunagar-Tiruchi Express (6886), Thiruthuraipundi- Mayiladuturai Passenger (866) have been cancelled.

As a precautionary measure, Southern Railway on Saturday cancelled all metre gauge express and passenger trains between Tambaram and Rameswaram and Tambaram and Nagore in both the directions, says an official release. — Special Correspondent

Solatium to kin of bus accident victims

SIVAGANGA: The Minister for Industries, Nainar Nagendran, on Saturday handed over cheques for Rs. 50,000 each to relatives of 10 persons, who were killed in the recent bus accident at Sanaveli.

He visited the houses of Nagalingam, Bhavani, Viswaganesh, Saik Dawood, Karan, Shakila Banu, Murugappa in Karaikudi, Sulochana, Paritha and Sikkandar in Devakottai along with Collector Anand Patil. He handed over the condolence message from Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.

Earlier, the Minister disbursed Rs. 4.8 lakhs to beneficiaries under the Chief Minister's Uzhavar Pathukappu Thittam at a function here. — Staff Reporter

Exhibition

CHENNAI: Kumari — Hall of History, an exhibition of paintings, sponsored by the Gandhi Kamaraj Trust in Kanyakumari, will be inaugurated by Pondicherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on December 15.

According to managing trustee Kumari Ananthan, historical paintings relating to Kanyakumari's links with history, such as Kumari Kandam, Tamil sangam period and kings ruled. Portraits of St. Thomas, apostle of Christ, who visited Kumari; freedom fighter Shenbagaraman, Gandhiji and Kamaraj will adorn the hall of history. — Special Correspondent

Music conference

THANJAVUR: A world music conference will be held at the Tamil University as part of its silver jubilee celebrations before the end of August 2006, says C. Subramaniam, Vice-Chancellor.

He released a book on "Isaiyum Pira Nunkalaigalum" at a function at the university on Friday.

He said the word Tamil also meant music. The Music department of the University has been chosen for research jointly with the Benares Hindu University.

K. Bhaskaran, Registrar (in-charge) received the first copy.

Amutha Pandiyan received the second copy and Annadurai the third copy.

Abraham Pandithar music competition and Abraham Pandithar trust lecture were also held.

In the competition, students from the Sri Venkateswara Matriculation Higher Secondary School, the Spastics Matriculation School, the St. Joseph Higher Secondary School and Kalyanasundaram Higher Secondary School participated.

R. Raja, won the first prize, V. Iswarya second prize and K.R. Buvana Malini third prize in the competition. — Staff Reporter

Teachers' association president dead

CHENNAI: S. Murthy, president of the Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary Graduate Teachers' Association, died of heart attack here on Friday. He was 49. The association said the last rites were performed at Therkiruppu, his native place in Cuddalore district, on Saturday.

During his tenure as State president for 25 years, he had led many struggles to protect the rights of graduate teachers, says a release. — Special Correspondent

Murder case accused nabbed

Tuticorin: Kutty, an accused in a case of murder that happened at Puliyampatti near here in 1993, was arrested on Saturday.

The Superintendent of Police, Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal, said Kutty along with Navneetan, Rajendran, Manoharan and Aathi murdered Muthuramalingam, owing to enmity. All the accused were arrested in 1993, but Kutty jumped the bail during trial. Others were convicted.

Mr. Aggarwal said Kutty was arrested at Tirupur near Coimbatore by a team of officials sent from here.

Couple drowned

THENI: K. Saravanan (35) of Periakulam and his wife Sarojini 32, drowned in the Kumbakarai falls near Vazhukkuparai while they were bathing on Saturday.

The police and fire service personnel recovered the bodies and sent them for post mortem.

Saravanan married Sarojini last month. A case has been registered in this connection.

Gold ornaments stolen

Ramanathapuram: Some unidentified persons on Saturday burgled a house and decamped with 34 sovereigns of gold ornaments at Radhanur near here. Sources said the burglars, who barged into the house of Begam (65) by breaking open the door, tied her and taken away the gold ornaments.

The R.S. Mangalam police have filed a case. — Staff Reporter
