Decline seen in average farm landholding: CSO

NEW DELHI:
The average size of agriculture landholding has declined from 2.28 hectares in 1970-71 to 1.41 hectares in 1995-96, whereas the cultivable farmland which is a major component of land resources has declined from 1,83,631 hectares in 1998-99 to 1,82,845 hectares in 2002-03 (provisional). The farm growth rate has declined from 4.7 per cent in the eighth plan to 1.2 per cent in the first three years of the 10th Five Year Plan period.
As per statistics from the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO), the total investment in agriculture including forestry, logging and fishing, measured in terms of gross capital formation increased in real terms from Rs.15,249 crores in 1993-94 to Rs. 24,186 crores in 2003-04, Agriculture and Food Minister told the Rajya Sabha on Friday.
