TIRUPUR: The Tirupur Revenue Divisional Officer, V. Kandhavel, on Wednesday seized an earthmover, which was engaged in illegal mining operations at Pichapalayam near Avanashi.
Surprise check
Following a tip-off, he conducted surprise check at Pichapalayam, where a group of people was engaged in illegal quarrying of gravel at a Government `porambokku' land. He seized an earthmover that was in operation at the site. Though he waited for more than three hours, no lorries turned up. Then, he took the earthmover to the Avanashi Taluk Office.
Report to be submitted
Mr. Kandhavel said that around 2,000 lorry loads of gravel had been illegally mined from the site. He has asked the Mines Department to assess the exact loss caused due to the mining and submit a report to the Government. Based on their survey, penalty would be imposed on the persons who were involved in the mining operation, the Revenue Divisional Officer added.
