Nellore: Buduru Srinivasulu, member, National Commission for Scheduled Tribes, New Delhi, said that the Commission under Article 338 A of the Constitution had been empowered to monitor all matters relating to safeguards provided for the STs, besides enquiring into specific complaints with respect to deprivation of their rights. He said on Saturday that the Commission could also participate and advise in the planning process of socio-economic development of STs. Regarding the powers of the Commission, Mr. Srinivasulu said that while investigating, it had all the powers of a civil court, summoning/enforcing the attendance of any person, besides receiving evidence on affidavits. Under clause 9 of Article 338 A of constitution, the Union and all State Governments should consult the Commission on all major policy matters affecting the STs.
Six offices
According to Mr. Srinivasulu, the Commission, besides the Central Office at New Delhi, had offices in six States. Mr. Srinivasulu, will visit mandals and interact with girijans.
