Funds released

Nellore: Development funds to the tune of Rs. 1.16 crores have been released for nine assembly constituencies of Nellore district. Of the proposed 395 works, 118 have been approved, which will be taken up by Panchayat Raj and Irrigation Departments. A total amount of Rs. 2.45 crores has been sanctioned, out of which Rs. 1.16 crores has been released initially. — Staff Reporter

Students' plea on syllabus change

KURNOOL: Students of history at undergraduate level have appealed to Sri Krishnadevaraya University to arrange for study materials on certain newly included chapters.

The students said the university had made drastic changes in "History of India" but no relevant books were available for reference. — Staff Reporter

Injured in accident

Nellore: Three persons sustained serious injuries after a motorcycle hit a rickshaw at Kottur center of Vinjamoor mandal on Saturday, resulting in the latter overturning on the main road. While one has been admitted at a local hospital, the others have been rushed to Nellore town. — Staff Reporter

TDP protest

ANANTAPUR: Telugu Desam Party will begin a 48-hour protest at the Collectorate on December 12 demanding that the Government compensate groundnut farmers who suffered losses due to recent heavy rains.

TDP district president Hanumantharaya Choudary said the Government which promised compensation earlier had gone back on its word. — Staff Reporter

Health workshop

ANANTAPUR: Kadiri MLA Jonna Ramaiah asked the health workers and paramedical staff to work for brining down the mortality rate among pregnant women.

Addressing a health awareness workshop sponsored by the Field Publicity department on Saturday, he said nutritional deficiency was the serious problem among women in rural areas.

This had resulted in higher rate of child mortality. Field Publicity Officer B.D.M. Ambedkar presided over the meeting. — Staff Reporter

Village secretaries suspended

NIZAMABAD: District Collector D.V. Raidu has suspended three village secretaries in Lingampet mandal under the charge of violation of rules of the Food Assurance Scheme and allowing machinery to execute the works.

Lingampet village secretary, Agamaiah, Jaldipur secretary, Mohammad Hasim and Bhavanipet village secretary, Prabhakara Chary were placed under suspension. Some time back, the Mandal Parishad Development Officer of the Lingampet was also suspended under the same charges.

Teppotsavam to be celebrated

KARIMNAGAR: In the wake of Lower Manair Dam (LMD) reservoir receiving copious inflows after 10 years, the project authorities have decided to celebrate Sri Venkateshwara Swamy teppotsavam festival in the reservoir waters in the outskirts of Karimnagar town on Sunday. Special prayers would be held at Sri Venkateshwara Swamy devasthanams, located in the LMD colony in the outskirts of the town on the occasion. The teppotsavam would begin from 6 pm on Sunday.

Stir threat by college teachers

HYDERABAD: Perturbed by the delay in the Government fulfilling its assurance to merge DA, equal to 50 per cent, with basic pay, the Joint Action Committee of Andhra Pradesh University and College Teachers' Associations is meeting at Osmania University on December 13 to chalk out an agitation programme.

B. Satyanarayana, secretary-general, said in a statement here on Saturday that in spite of repeated assurances by the Chairman, APSCHE, that a favourable decision would be taken, the Government was not issuing orders. - Special Correspondent

Hyderabad: APCC president K. Keshava Rao has appointed the following persons as executive members of the Andhra Pradesh Chamber of Municipal Chairpersons with immediate effect, according to a press release here on Saturday:

Port workers' stir off

Kakinada: Port workers who are agitating against the decision of the Government to constitute a Maritime Board replacing the Port Department, have called off their 45-day relay fast on Saturday following an assurance given by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on settling their demands. Local MLA Gopalakrishna prevailed over the leaders conveying Dr. Reddy's assurance, to call of their stir by offering fruit juice. NGOs State association vice-president Edison Babu, AITUC district general secretary K. Krishna Rao and Port work charged workers union secretary Bakki Prasada Rao, Port protection committee leader G. Suryanarayana were present. - Correspondent

Family of three

commits suicide

Kakinada: In a tragic incident, a family of three members unable to bear the burden of debts, committed suicide by setting themselves ablaze, in Komalavari Veedhi in J. Ramaraopet area here on Saturday.

The charred bodies of Battula Anjaneyulu (38), his wife Gouri Devi (33), and son Sai Kiran (11) were recovered by breaking open the doors by the relatives who rushed on noticing the flames.

Circle Inspector Balla Lakshminarayana said a plastic can containing petrol was found in the room. Based on the complaint lodged by the house owner, a case was registered and the bodies sent for post mortem. However no suicide note was left behind. - Correspondent

CPI backs canal

widening proposal

KURNOOL: Communist Party of India (CPI) State secretary K. Narayana extended party's support to the Srisailam Right Main Canal widening proposal at Pothireddypadu saying that it was important for providing water to the parched lands of Rayalaseema region.

Addressing a meeting of farmers at Nandyal on Saturday, he said canal widening would not violate the spirit of Bachawat award. He said the CPI had no dual policy as other parties were pursuing on irrigation projects. The party would openly support the G.O. 170 and seek special package for development of Telangana and other backward regions. - Staff Reporter

Elected union president

<74,150,200,500>Sangareddy: G. Ellaiah of BHEL Employee's Trade Union Congress was elected president of the union trouncing his nearest rival Sarve Satynarayana of BHEL All Employees Trade Union Congress by a margin of 707 votes. Ellaiah got 1,601 votes and Satyanarayana 894 votes. Outgoing president Teegela Krishna Reddy of TNTUC polled 319 votes, while Krishnam Raju of UETUC and N. Ramakrishna of BMS polled 391 and 51 votes respectively. A total of eight votes were found invalid. - Staff Reporter
