THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Energy Conservation Society (ECS) has joined hands with the Kerala State Electricity Board for a State-wide campaign to reduce household power consumption during the peak load time from 6p.m. to 10 p.m. According to the KSEB, the State experiences a shortfall of 1,000 MW during peak load conditions. To make up this deficit, the board spends Rs.50 lakhs daily to tap the central pool for additional power. The message of the campaign is to avoid the use of power-intensive equipment like iron, mixie, pump, grinder, air-conditioner and heater during the peak load time and switch off all but the most essential fans and lights in the house. The campaign will seek to achieve maximum power-saving during the peak load hours on December 14. The KSEB will measure the consumption during this time and compare it with that on November 14. The ECS is organising a slogan-writing contest on the theme `energy conservation.' The competition will be held separately for students up to the 12th standard, students of other classes and the general public. The last date for application is December 31. The society is also planning a cash award to encourage students to prepare energy log sheet records and adopt power-saving methods. The contest will be open for students from UPS to higher secondary level. Simultaneously, the ECS is planning to set up 100 energy conservation clubs in schools across the State. As many as 50 such clubs will be promoted in ITCs, ITIs, polytechnics and collegesA model energy auditing system for students will be taken up at the district level. Details of contests and programmes are available at the ECS office. Interested persons are directed to contact the phone numbers 94470 82961, 93878 00979 or 94475 28068.
