RASIPURAM: Educated people in the country should volunteer to protect and promote human rights, speakers at the State- level seminar on Human Rights and Civil Society organised by the Department of Political Science, Thiruvalluvar, Government Arts College here on Saturday said. Former Head, Department of Political Science, Annamalai University, A. Shanmugam in his inaugural address said, "Unfortunately educated people show an indifferent attitude to the human rights violations. This approach needs to be altered. We should respect the rights of fellow human beings and should fight to ensure equal rights to all the people."
Gender inequality
He said poverty was the most important cause for the human rights violation. "Poverty makes men throw away their dignity and submit to humiliation to earn a living." He also expressed concern over the prevalence of widespread gender inequality in the Indian social system.
